1 HOW TO BEHAVE ON IRC 2 3 Authors: Lea Viljanen (LadyBug) viljanen@kreeta.helsinki.fi 4 Ari Husa (luru) so-luru@tolsun.oulu.fi 5 Revised, March 1994: Helen Rose (Trillian) hrose@kei.com 6 7 1) Language 8 9 The most widely understood and spoken language on IRC is English. 10 However! As IRC is used in many different countries, English is by 11 no means the only language. If you want to speak some other language 12 than English (for example with your friends), go to a separate channel 13 and set the topic (with /topic) to indicate that. For example 14 /topic #channelname Finnish only! 15 would mean that this channel would be reserved for Finnish discussion. 16 On the other hand, you should check the topic (with /list command) 17 before you move to a channel to see if there are any restrictions about 18 language. 19 On a channel not restricted by /topic, please speak a language 20 everybody can understand. If you want to do otherwise, change channels 21 and set the topic accordingly. 22 23 24 2) Hello/Goodbye 25 26 It's not necessary to greet everybody on a channel personally. 27 Usually one "Hello" or equivalent is enough. And don't expect everybody 28 to greet you back. On a channel with 20 people that would mean one 29 screenful of hellos. It's sensible not to greet, in order not to be rude 30 to the rest of the channel. If you must say hello, do it with a private /msg. 31 The same applies to goodbyes. 32 33 34 3) Discussion 35 36 When you come to a new channel it's advised you to listen 37 for a while to get an impression of what's discussed. Please feel free 38 to join in, but do not try to force your topic into the discussion 39 if that doesn't come naturally. 40 41 42 4) {}|[]\ 43 44 IRC has quite a lot of people from Scandinavian countries, 45 the above characters are letters in their alphabet. This 46 has been explained on IRC about a thousand and one times, so 47 read the following, do not ask it on IRC: 48 49 { is an A with 2 dots over it 50 } is an A with a small circle above it 51 | is either an O with 2 dots over it or an O with a dash (/) through it 52 [, ], and \ are the preceding three letters in upper case. 53 54 There are a lot of people from Japan as well, who use Kanji characters 55 which may look quite exotic as well. As I don't know Kanji I don't 56 even try to explain any of the characters. 57 58 5) ATTENTION! 59 60 Remember, people on IRC form their opinions about you only by 61 your actions, writings and comments on IRC. So think before you type. 62 Do not "dump" to a channel or user (send large amounts of unwanted 63 information). This is likely to get you /kicked off the channel or 64 /killed off from irc. Dumping causes network 'burps', connections going 65 down because servers cannot handle the large amount of traffic any more.
